Chapter 15 – Professor Surprise

The phone rang, and a sweet, young sounding, female voice answered, “Professor Van Dorne.”

I felt a bit of non-sequitur. That was his last name, but he had a deep basso voice. Thinking for a moment, I concluded that maybe he had hired an assistant. “Could you please put me through to the Professor. Tell him that Thal Jardine wants to talk to him.”

“What are you calling about, Thal?” The voice asked.

“That is a private matter. If you can’t put me through to Professor Herb Van Dorne, can you give me a better time to ring?”

“Look, if you aren’t going to talk to me now, then calling back later won’t help.” My blood started boiling. I didn’t take Herb for the type to hire an assistant at all, let alone one who was obstructive and officious.

“If I have to visit Herb in person to discuss this, Miss, you’ll find yourself out on your arse. I know he wouldn’t want someone screening who talked to him.”

“What the hell are you talking about, Thal? No one is screening my calls,” came the reply. Then everything clicked. I was talking to Herb. But what was the deal with the voice? I needed to double-check.

“Did you ignore everyone’s warnings about what you should study long and hard before messing with, Herb?” I asked, somewhat acidly. Transmutation and Transformation magic had fascinated him… and there was a reasonable explanation for the voice change. The answer was not one that I particularly liked.

There was an embarrassed silence on the other end of the phone. It had been four or five months since I had last seen Herb. I had been in Canberra checking the local hunters were not Reformationists. Transmutation was simple enough, but Transformation magic was among the hardest for a Wizard to master.

Transmutation changed the intrinsic nature of something. Transformation forced something into a form that was not its own.

“You proved to yourself that Transmutation and Transformation are not similar magic, I hope.” I laughed into the phone.

“Oh, yes,” The Professor blurted back. “Why, now I can see so many possibilities. But… Despite everything the Tower and I have tried, I have not been able to change back. I can change into female animal forms, but I seem to have done something that has locked me into both the female form and, in particular, this female form.”

Offhandedly, I said, “I hope you aren’t a redhead now.”

“Oh, no. I’m raven-haired now. A young body, fitter than the one I was used to.” There was something almost mournful in her tone, gods knew why. Most Wizards would kill for something that made them physically younger. “The number of propositions is annoying too. I have to conclude that many men find the form attractive.”

That was a statement that I could only imagine The Professor would come up with. Most men, waking up in a female body, would make their own assessment of how attractive their form looked. The Professor would either not care or wait to see other people’s reactions.
